Description
Sat. 12/12 from 7-9pm: Annual Caprock Celtic Christmas concert @ the Maedgen Theater at Texas Tech. Students (with ID) free. Adults $10.50. Seniors $4.50.The Caprock Celtic Christmas, a treasured annual event in the South Plains holiday calendar since 2001, is a fund-raiser for the Vernacular Music Center Scholarship.
Singers, players, dancers, storytellers, and more gather to perform traditional repertoires of the session, including traditional Appalachian, Irish, and English dance; Gaelic-, Welsh-, and English-language traditional songs; instrumental dance tunes and slow airs, and much more.
The much-loved fear an t ("man of the house") Tom McGovern serves as host, along with a gala cast of visiting guest artists from all over the globe.
VMC ensembles and sponsored groups, including Tzumba, the Early Music Ensemble, the Tech Set Dancers, Caprock Morris, and valued TTU colleagues, and Lubbock's trad-Irish band Johnny Faa provide dances, tunes and songs, along with a visit from the mid-Winter hobbyhorse ritual called Mari Lwyd, and an Ulster mummers' play.
Tickets, which raise funds for the Vernacular Music Center Scholarship at Texas Tech, are available in advance at the School of Music and at www.music.ttu.edu (general admission $10.50; seniors $4.50) as well as at the door. Students (with valid ID) admitted FREE.
